How to do it

  1. Hang from the bar and start a rhythmic kip, swinging through arch and hollow.
  2. As you swing forward, drive your hips and pull your chest to the bar.
  3. Push away and let your body cycle backward in a continuous circular loop.
  4. Catch the next swing and keep the flow going for your reps.

The one cue that matters

Lock in 15+ kipping reps and solid strict strength first, this move loads the shoulders hard.

Muscles worked

The butterfly pull-up turns the pull-up into a continuous circular cycle, your lats drive you to the bar as your hips swing through, your biceps assist the pull, and instead of stopping at the top you push away and loop straight into the next rep. The payoff is pure speed, big unbroken sets at a pace strict or even kipping pull-ups can't match. It earns its place in competitive fitness workouts where rep rate matters, but only for athletes with the strict strength and shoulder control to spend there.

FAQ

What's the difference between butterfly and kipping pull-ups?

A kipping pull-up swings, pulls, and resets with a distinct backswing each rep, the butterfly never stops, your body traces a continuous circle so reps chain with no pause. It's faster but far less forgiving technically.

Are butterfly pull-ups cheating?

For building back strength, they're not the tool, strict pull-ups are. In a timed workout they're simply the most efficient way to move through high reps, different job, different rep.

When am I ready to learn butterfly pull-ups?

When you own solid strict pull-ups and can cycle 15 plus smooth kipping reps. The butterfly loads your shoulders hard at speed, so earning that base first isn't optional, it's the entry fee.
