How to do it

  1. Stand side-on to a cable set just below shoulder height and grab the handle with your outside hand.
  2. Start with your forearm parallel to the floor, palm facing in, elbow at your ribs.
  3. Extend your arm out to the side until it locks out lateral to your shoulder.
  4. Return under control, then finish your reps before switching sides.

The one cue that matters

Keep your elbow pinned to your ribs, brace your core so you don't twist.

Muscles worked

Standing side-on to the stack and extending your arm out laterally puts the triceps through a pressing path almost no other movement uses, with the cable's constant tension loading the lockout from a fresh angle. The elbow stays pinned at your ribs, so the triceps alone open the arm against the resistance, one side at a time. It earns its place as an accessory when standard pushdowns have gone stale, and as strict single arm work that shows up any left to right gap.

FAQ

What does the lateral cable tricep extension do that pushdowns do not?

It loads elbow extension on a sideways path with the cable pulling across your body, so the triceps work against a line of resistance pushdowns never provide. It is a variety and weak point tool, not a replacement for your heavy pressing.

What height should the cable be set for lateral tricep extensions?

Just below shoulder height, so your forearm starts parallel to the floor with the elbow at your ribs. Too low turns it into a kickback, too high drags your shoulder into the movement.

Why do I twist toward the cable during this exercise?

The stack is pulling across your body and your trunk is losing the fight. Brace your core, soften the load, and treat the stillness of your torso as part of the exercise, only the forearm should be moving.
