How to do it

  1. Set a handle on a low pulley and grip it with one hand.
  2. Hinge forward and pin your elbow up by your side.
  3. Extend your arm straight back until locked.
  4. Return slowly without dropping your elbow.

The one cue that matters

Keep your upper arm still and squeeze your triceps at full extension.

Muscles worked

Kickbacks live at the point most triceps work ignores, full contraction with your arm extended behind you. A low cable keeps resistance on the muscle through that entire arc, so unlike a dumbbell version there is no dead spot where the load just hangs. Done one arm at a time from a hinged position, it is a precision finisher rather than a mass builder, ideal at the end of an arm session when you want every rep to end in a hard squeeze.

FAQ

Are cable kickbacks better than dumbbell kickbacks?

For this movement, yes. A dumbbell only resists you near the top of the rep, while the cable pulls against you through the whole range, so every degree of the extension actually counts.

How much weight should I use for cable kickbacks?

Light. This is a peak-contraction exercise, and if the stack forces your elbow to drop or your torso to twist, the tension leaves your triceps. Pick a weight you can pause at full lockout.

Why do I feel kickbacks in my shoulder?

Your upper arm is drifting. Hinge forward, pin the elbow high beside your ribs and move only the forearm. If the whole arm swings, your rear delt takes over the work.
