How to do it

  1. Stand tall with a dumbbell in each hand at your sides.
  2. Rise up onto your toes for a calf raise.
  3. As your heels lift, shrug your shoulders up toward your ears.
  4. Hold the top briefly, traps and calves squeezed.
  5. Lower the shrug and heels together with control.

The one cue that matters

Time the shrug with the heel rise so both peak at the top together.

Muscles worked

Rising onto the balls of your feet under load takes the calves through their full range, and pairing it with a shrug at the top means the whole rep finishes with everything squeezed tall. The calves get honest time under tension at full extension, and holding the top position briefly punishes any bouncing. It is an efficient combo for the end of a session when you want maximum work from one pair of dumbbells.

FAQ

Why pair a calf raise with a shrug?

Efficiency and a better top position. The shrug forces you to finish each rep fully tall and hold it, which kills the bounce that ruins most people's calf raises. Two movements, one set of dumbbells, no wasted time.

Should the calf raise and shrug happen together or separately?

Together. Heels and shoulders rise as one so both peak at the top at the same moment. Splitting them into two beats turns a smooth combo into a clunky superset.

How can I get more from the calf portion?

Slow the lowering phase and let your heels travel all the way down before the next rep. The stretch at the bottom and the pause at the top matter more for calves than piling on weight.
