Clean it, press it, lock it out strong.

How to do it

  1. Clean a kettlebell to the rack position resting against your forearm at shoulder height.
  2. Brace your core and press the bell straight overhead until your arm locks out.
  3. Keep the bell stacked over your shoulder at the top.
  4. Lower under control back to the rack position.

The one cue that matters

Keep your wrist straight and the bell resting on the back of your forearm, not flopping back.

Muscles worked

The kettlebell hangs behind the wrist rather than sitting in the palm, so the bell's offset weight pulls against you the whole way up and forces the shoulder stabilisers to fight for a clean path to lockout. The press starts from the rack against the forearm, driven by the shoulders with the triceps finishing the lockout. It earns its place because that offset load builds pressing strength and shoulder control at the same time, in a way an evenly balanced weight never demands.

FAQ

Why does a kettlebell press feel harder than a dumbbell press with the same weight?

The bell's mass sits behind your wrist and off-centre, so your shoulder has to stabilise a load that is actively trying to drift, rather than one balanced neatly in your hand. Same kilos, more work.

What is the rack position and why does it matter?

It is the start of every press, the bell resting on the back of your forearm at shoulder height, elbow tucked, wrist straight. A sloppy rack means a sloppy press, so clean the bell to a solid rack before every set.

The kettlebell hurts my wrist or forearm, what am I doing wrong?

Usually a bent wrist or a bell that flops over the hand instead of resting on the forearm. Grip the handle deeper toward the corner, keep the wrist dead straight, and the bell should sit quietly against your forearm rather than banging it.
