Kill the bounce, own every single rep.

ChestSecondary: Triceps, ShouldersBodyweight

How to do it

  1. Set up in a strong push-up position, body in a straight line.
  2. Lower all the way down until your chest touches the floor.
  3. Lift your hands off the ground for a beat to reset.
  4. Replace your hands and press back up to the top.

The one cue that matters

The hand release proves a full rep. No half reps, no momentum.

Muscles worked

The hand release push-up adds a lie-detector to the classic press-up, chest all the way to the floor, hands lifted, then press back up from an absolute dead stop. Killing the stretch reflex at the bottom means your chest has to generate every newton from zero, with the triceps and shoulders driving the press home. It standardises range and removes bounce completely, which is why it shows up in fitness tests and why it builds honest pressing strength from the floor up.

FAQ

What is the point of lifting your hands off the floor?

It proves full range and deletes momentum. With your hands off the ground, there is no bounce and no half-rep, every push starts from a true dead stop, which is harder and builds real bottom-position strength.

Why are hand release push-ups harder than normal push-ups?

Regular push-ups let you reuse elastic energy from the descent. The hand release wipes that out, so your muscles produce all the force from a standstill, expect your rep count to drop noticeably compared to standard push-ups.

How do I stop my hips sagging when I press back up?

Re-brace before every press. In the beat while your hands are lifted, squeeze your glutes and lock your trunk, then place the hands and drive up as one rigid plank. If the hips still peel off the floor first, drop to knee push-ups and build.
