How to do it

  1. Lie on your back and place a foam roller under your upper back.
  2. Plant your feet flat, knees bent.
  3. Drive through your heels to lift your hips into a bridge.
  4. Hold the top position with glutes squeezed and core tight.
  5. Keep breathing steadily for the hold.

The one cue that matters

Stay balanced on the roller and keep your core braced so you don't wobble off.

Muscles worked

This drill flips the roller from massage tool to unstable platform: with your upper back balanced across it, holding the top of a glute bridge becomes a test of squeeze and stillness. The glutes hold hip extension isometrically while the roller's wobble demands constant tiny corrections. It is an activation piece, ideal minutes before squats, hinges, or sprints.

FAQ

Is this a foam rolling exercise or a glute exercise?

A glute exercise that borrows the roller. There is no rolling or tissue work happening, the roller is there purely to add instability to the bridge hold.

Where exactly does the roller go?

Across the upper back around the shoulder blades, never under the neck or the lower back. It should feel like balancing on a firm shelf that happens to wobble.

How long should I hold the bridge?

For the set time with an unbroken glute squeeze. If your hamstrings cramp or take over, lower down, reset your feet closer to your hips, and start the hold again.
