How to do it

  1. Lie on your back with hands under your glutes and legs extended.
  2. Lift both legs a few inches off the floor.
  3. Flutter them up and down in small, quick alternating kicks.
  4. Keep the motion steady without letting your feet touch down.

The one cue that matters

Pin your lower back to the floor. If it arches, lift your legs a touch higher.

Muscles worked

Holding both legs off the floor parks the lower region of your abs in a sustained isometric contraction, and the rapid alternating kicks add a rhythm your core must stabilise against. The real exercise is not the kicking, it is refusing to let your lower back peel away from the floor as your legs lever further from your body. Zero kit, minimal space, maximum burn.

FAQ

What is the difference between flutter kicks and leg raises?

Leg raises move through a big range for controlled reps, flutter kicks hold one low position and grind out endurance under constant tension. They train the same area with different demands, so both earn a place.

My lower back keeps arching during flutter kicks, how do I fix it?

Bend your knees slightly and shorten the sets while your abs build the strength to hold the position. Range and duration both grow quickly once the low back stays glued down.

How fast should flutter kicks be?

Small, quick, and controlled beats big and frantic. Drive the motion from your hips with near-straight legs, kicks that turn into knee pumps mean the abs have clocked off.
