How to do it

  1. Lie on your back, hands tucked under your glutes for support.
  2. Lift both legs a few inches off the floor.
  3. Open your legs wide, then cross one over the other like scissors.
  4. Keep alternating which leg crosses on top without touching the ground.

The one cue that matters

Press your lower back flat into the floor. If it arches, raise your legs higher.

Muscles worked

With your legs hovering just off the floor, scissors force the lower portion of your abs and the deep core to hold your pelvis steady while your legs cross and recross. The work is not in the crossing, it is in refusing to let your lower back peel off the floor while the levers move. Simple setup, zero kit, and a burn that arrives fast.

FAQ

Why does my lower back hurt during ab scissors?

Your legs are too low for your current core strength, so your back arches to compensate. Raise your legs higher, press your lower back into the floor, and lower them over time as you get stronger.

What is the difference between scissors and flutter kicks?

Flutter kicks move the legs up and down, scissors cross them side to side over each other. The sideways crossing adds a rotational challenge your core has to cancel out. Both live or die on keeping the back flat.

How long should I do ab scissors for?

Until your form breaks, not until you hit a number. The set is over the moment your lower back lifts or your legs start swinging wildly. Quality time under tension beats big rep counts.
