How to do it

  1. Set up in a high plank, then walk your hands out past your shoulders.
  2. Hold a straight line from head to heels.
  3. Brace your core hard against the longer lever.
  4. Hold the position for the set time.

The one cue that matters

Keep ribs down and hips level, the further your hands reach, the harder you brace.

Muscles worked

Walking your hands out beyond your shoulders lengthens the lever between your two support points, and your abs pay for every centimetre of that reach. The core has to resist a far stronger pull into a sagging arch than a standard plank produces, without a single limb moving. It looks like a minor tweak and holds like a different exercise.

FAQ

How far forward should my hands go?

Only as far as you can hold a rigid line for the whole set. Creep the hands out in small increments over weeks, distance earned slowly beats a dramatic reach with sagging hips.

Is an extended plank the same as a long-lever plank?

Same idea, different names. Both describe planking with the hands ahead of the shoulders to lengthen the lever, and everything that makes one harder applies to the other.

Why does my lower back complain in the extended position?

The reach is beyond what your abs can currently resist, so your spine is sagging into an arch. Bring the hands back toward a standard plank and rebuild the distance gradually.
