How to do it

  1. Stand on a low platform holding a barbell at your thighs, soft knees.
  2. Push your hips back and lower the bar below your feet's level.
  3. Let the deficit stretch your hamstrings further than usual.
  4. Drive your hips forward to stand tall.

The one cue that matters

Only go as deep as you can keep a flat back, the platform adds range not slack.

Muscles worked

Standing on a platform lets the bar sink below the level of your feet, extending the Romanian deadlift's hamstring stretch beyond what flat ground allows. That extra loaded range at the bottom is the entire reason the variation exists, and the glutes still close every rep by driving the hips to lockout. It suits experienced lifters whose mobility has outgrown the standard RDL.

FAQ

How high should the platform be for deficit RDLs?

Small. A low block or a sturdy plate's worth of height adds meaningful range, and anything more usually just buys spinal rounding. The goal is a deeper stretch you can control.

Should I go lighter than my normal RDL?

Yes, at least at first. The extra range loads the hamstrings at their most stretched and vulnerable point, so give yourself a few sessions to earn the depth before matching your usual numbers.

Who should skip the elevated version?

Anyone whose back rounds before reaching full depth on regular RDLs. The platform amplifies whatever range you have, it does not create range you have not built.
