How to do it

  1. Sit and rest your forearms on your thighs, palms up, holding the bar.
  2. Let your wrists hang off your knees and the bar roll to your fingertips.
  3. Curl the bar up by flexing your wrists.
  4. Squeeze, then lower back down into the stretch.

The one cue that matters

Keep your forearms pinned to your thighs, only your wrists move.

Muscles worked

Letting the bar roll down to your fingertips and curling it back up takes the forearm flexors through their complete range, from stretched and nearly open-handed to fully contracted. Nothing assists, your elbows are pinned to your thighs and the wrists do everything. It earns its place because grip and forearm size are built here, not accidentally inherited from pulling days.

FAQ

Do wrist curls actually build grip strength?

They build the forearm flexors that close and hold your grip, especially when you let the bar roll to the fingertips and squeeze it back. Pair them with heavy holds and your grip stops being the weak link on deadlifts and rows.

Should I let the bar roll down my fingers?

Yes, that finger roll is the best part of the exercise, extending the range and training the fingers themselves. Just control it, letting the bar drop and catching it is how sets end early.

Why do my wrists hurt during wrist curls?

Usually too much weight moved too fast through a joint that is not used to direct work. Start light, move slowly through the full range, and build up over weeks. The forearms respond well to higher reps anyway.
