What should I do if all the racks are taken?

Train around the rack: swap in dumbbell and machine versions, ask to work in, or reorder your session.

The quick answer

A busy rack does not have to end your workout. Politely ask to work in between someone's sets, since most lifters will share. If not, reorder your session to do accessories first, or swap the rack lift for a dumbbell or machine version that trains the same muscles. Goblet squats, dumbbell presses, and leg press cover most rack based work.

How to think about it

Ask to work in

Squats and presses have long rest periods, so working in between sets is normal gym etiquette. Ask, adjust the load quickly, and you both keep moving.

Reorder the session

Do your rows, curls, leg press, or hamstring work first and circle back once a rack frees up. Nothing says the barbell lift must come first.

Swap the movement

Goblet or Bulgarian split squats replace back squats, dumbbell or machine presses replace the bench, and Romanian deadlifts with dumbbells cover hinges. Same muscles, no rack.
