What exercises replace barbell squats?

Bulgarian split squats, hack squats, leg press, goblet squats, and belt squats all build quads and glutes without the barbell.

The quick answer

Plenty of moves build legs as well as or better than barbell squats. Bulgarian split squats are the top pick, brutal on quads and glutes with just dumbbells. Hack squats and the leg press let you load the quads heavy with less lower back strain, and goblet or belt squats work when you want a simpler or spine friendly option. Push them near failure and they cover everything squats do.

How to think about it

Bulgarian split squats first

This single leg movement hammers quads and glutes, exposes and fixes side to side imbalances, and needs only dumbbells. Many lifters grow more from these than from back squats.

Machines for heavy loading

The hack squat and leg press let you overload the quads without balancing a bar on your back, which is ideal if squats hurt your lower back or shoulders.

Loaded options that spare the spine

Goblet squats and belt squats keep the load off your spine while still training the same pattern, useful for back issues or home setups.
