Should I use 5/3/1?

5/3/1 is excellent for building the big lifts slowly and sustainably, but pair it with accessories if hypertrophy is your goal.

The quick answer

5/3/1 is a proven, low stress way to build strength on your main lifts using submaximal percentages and small monthly jumps. It shines for intermediates who want structure and steady progress without burning out. On its own the main work is light on volume, so run a template with accessory work like Boring But Big if you also want size.

How to think about it

Why it works

It uses a training max at about 90 percent of your real max, so you rarely grind and progress stays sustainable. The AMRAP top set each week lets you push while the base stays manageable.

Watch the volume

The core 5/3/1 sets alone are not enough hard volume for maximum muscle growth. That is why templates bolt on accessories, and you should pick one that does.

Best fit

It suits intermediates who have stalled on linear progression and want a slower, more durable path. Pure beginners often progress faster on a simple linear program first.
