How long does recomposition take?

Recomp is slow; expect visible change over 3 to 6 months and meaningful transformation over a year or more.

The quick answer

Body recomposition, building muscle while losing fat at the same time, is slow because the two processes partly work against each other. Beginners, people returning after a break, and those with more fat to lose recomp fastest, often seeing clear change in 3 to 6 months. Trained lifters recomp much more slowly, so plan on a year or more of consistent lifting, high protein at 1.6 to 2.2 g per kg, and eating near maintenance.

How to think about it

Who recomps fast

Newer lifters, detrained returnees, and higher body-fat individuals can build muscle and lose fat simultaneously and see results within a few months. The further you are from your genetic ceiling, the faster it happens.

Why it is slow for the trained

Once you are lean and experienced, muscle gain slows to a crawl and simultaneous fat loss is even harder, so progress is measured over many months. This is when dedicated bulk and cut phases often beat trying to recomp.

What speeds it up

Recomp lives or dies on protein, training quality, and eating near maintenance. Hit 1.6 to 2.2 g protein per kg, progressively overload your lifts, sleep well, and be patient, because the changes show up on a scale of months, not weeks.
