Read your performance
The clearest sign is your numbers going backward. If weights you handled easily now feel heavy and reps are falling across multiple sessions, you are accumulating fatigue faster than you clear it.
Watch for stalling strength, lingering soreness, poor sleep, high resting heart rate, and dread of training; those signal under-recovery.
The tells are performance and mood, not just tiredness. If your lifts are dropping session to session, soreness lasts more than 3 days, your sleep is worse, resting heart rate is up, or you dread the gym, you likely need more rest. Most lifters do well with 1 to 3 rest days a week. Recovery is when muscle is actually built, so more training is not automatically better.

Soreness that outstays 72 hours, disrupted sleep, an elevated morning resting heart rate, and nagging joints all point to under-recovery. One rough day is normal; a pattern is the warning.
Losing motivation to train, irritability, and a dip in appetite often show up before physical symptoms. When training feels like dread rather than a lift, take the day.
