Am I doing too much volume?

Likely yes if your lifts are stalling or falling, joints ache, sleep is poor, and sessions feel dreadful despite eating well.

The quick answer

Too much volume shows up as stalling or dropping strength, nagging joint aches, poor sleep, and workouts you dread even though your nutrition is fine. If you are well past 20 hard sets per muscle a week and going backwards, that is the signal. Cut volume by a third for a week or two and watch your lifts bounce back. More sets only help up to a point.

How to think about it

Read the performance signal

The clearest sign is lifts stalling or dropping across several sessions while you eat and sleep enough. That is recovery debt, not a reason to add more work.

Check the systemic symptoms

Persistent joint aches, disrupted sleep, elevated resting heart rate, and low motivation together point to overreaching from too much volume.

Know your ceiling

Most muscles grow best on 10 to 20 hard sets a week. Beyond that, extra sets add fatigue faster than growth, and past roughly 25 you often go backwards.

When to see a professional

If joint pain is sharp, persistent, or getting worse rather than just general fatigue, stop that movement and see a doctor or physio.
