How to do it

  1. Sit in the machine and grip the handles at your sides.
  2. Keep your torso upright and elbows tucked.
  3. Press the handles down until your arms are extended.
  4. Return slowly to a stretch.

The one cue that matters

Push through your palms and lock out, keep your chest tall.

Muscles worked

The seated dip machine takes the dip's pressing pattern, locks it into a fixed path, and lets you drive the handles down with nothing to balance. Your triceps own the lockout while the chest assists out of the stretched top position. That stability is the whole appeal: you can load it heavy or push to failure without worrying about wobbling between two bars.

FAQ

Is the seated dip machine as good as real dips?

It trains the same pressing muscles with far less shoulder and stability demand, so it is a great place to build strength before bodyweight dips, or to keep pushing after them. Bar dips train more control, the machine lets you load more safely.

How do I feel this more in my triceps?

Sit tall, tuck your elbows close to your ribs and finish every rep at full lockout. The more upright your torso and the tighter the elbows, the more the triceps take over from the chest.

How far should I let the handles come back up?

Ride them back until you feel a genuine stretch through the triceps and chest, without letting the weight stack settle. Cutting that top half of the range turns it into an expensive half press.
