How to do it

  1. Sit in the machine with your back flat against the pad and grip the handles at shoulder height.
  2. Press the handles straight overhead until your arms nearly lock out.
  3. Pause briefly at the top.
  4. Lower under control until your hands return to shoulder height.

The one cue that matters

Keep your back pinned to the pad and don't let your elbows flare too far behind you.

Muscles worked

This plate-loaded press stacks the resistance straight over your shoulders while the seat and back pad eliminate the balance tax entirely. Your delts drive the handles from shoulder height to lockout with the triceps finishing, and because nothing needs stabilising, every bit of effort turns into pressing. It is the tool for pushing shoulder work close to failure safely, especially late in a session or for anyone whose free-weight overhead press is limited by wobble rather than strength.

FAQ

Is the Hammerstrength shoulder press better than barbell overhead press?

Different jobs. The barbell builds total-body pressing strength and stability, the machine isolates the delts and lets you chase hard reps without a bar hovering over your face. Plenty of strong lifters run both in the same week.

Why does my back arch on the machine shoulder press?

Usually the weight is heavy and your ribs flare to create a fake incline. Plant your feet, tuck your ribs, and keep your whole back against the pad, if you cannot press without arching, the pin needs to move up a plate lighter.

How far down should I lower the handles?

Back to shoulder height, or wherever just above that your shoulders allow without pinching. Full controlled range grows delts better than half pumps, but forcing depth that your joints dislike buys nothing.
