How to do it

  1. Sit with your upper back on the pad and the lap pad across your hips.
  2. Plant your feet flat on the platform shoulder-width.
  3. Drive through your heels to thrust your hips up.
  4. Squeeze the glutes hard at the top, then lower under control.

The one cue that matters

Fully lock out the hips and squeeze, don't stop short at the top.

Muscles worked

The glute drive machine takes the barbell hip thrust and strips away all the setup friction, pad on your hips, back on the support, feet on the platform, go. Driving your hips into full extension makes the glutes the prime mover with the hamstrings assisting from below, and the fixed pad keeps the load planted so you can chase a genuinely hard lockout squeeze. It belongs in any lower session focused on glute size and hip extension strength, especially for lifters who find barbell thrust setup a whole workout on its own.

FAQ

Glute drive machine vs barbell hip thrust, which is better?

Same movement pattern, different logistics. The machine sets up in seconds, holds the load steady and is easy to progress, the barbell version lets you go heavier long-term and trains more stabilisation. Most people get great glute results from either.

Where should my feet go on the glute drive machine?

Flat on the platform about shoulder-width, positioned so your shins are roughly vertical at the top of the thrust. Feet too low turns it quaddy, too high shifts it toward the hamstrings, adjust until the glutes do the talking.

Why do I feel the glute drive in my lower back?

You are finishing the rep by arching instead of squeezing. Tuck your ribs, drive through the heels, and end the rep with a posterior tilt and a hard glute squeeze rather than pushing the hips sky-high through your spine.
