Cable Chest Press

Bench-style pressing with tension that never quits.

How to do it

  1. Set both cables to chest height and grab a handle in each hand.
  2. Step forward into a staggered stance with a slight forward lean.
  3. Press both handles straight out in front of your chest until your arms extend.
  4. Squeeze, then return under control to the start.

The one cue that matters

Keep your chest proud and elbows from drifting too high as you press.

Muscles worked

Pressing from a standing staggered stance with cables at chest height gives your pecs resistance through the entire arc, including the squeeze at full extension where a bench press goes light. Your triceps drive the lockout while the slight forward lean lets you press with real weight without being pushed off balance. It earns a place as a chest builder that keeps tension constant and as a pressing option when every bench in the gym is taken.

FAQ

Is the cable chest press as good as a bench press?

Different jobs. The bench lets you load heavier, the cable press keeps your chest under tension right through the finish and lets the movement path follow your shoulders rather than a fixed bar. Plenty of good chest programmes use both.

Why do I keep getting pulled backward on cable chest presses?

Your stance is too narrow or too upright. Stagger your feet, lean slightly into the press, and treat your whole body as the bench, if the weight still drags you back, it's too heavy for your setup.

What height should the cables be set at?

Chest height for the standard press, the handles should travel straight forward from your chest, not up or down. Shifting the pulleys higher or lower changes the angle and the part of the chest doing most of the work.
