How to do it

  1. Set the bar across your upper back and brace your core.
  2. Squat all the way down to full depth.
  3. Rise a few inches, then dip back into the bottom for a deep partial rep.
  4. Drive all the way up to standing to finish the rep.

The one cue that matters

Stay tight through the partial bounce, don't relax or collapse at the bottom.

Muscles worked

Adding a partial rep in the hole doubles your time in the deepest position, where the quads sit at their longest and the growth stimulus per rep is highest. The glutes assist by driving you out of the bottom twice each rep instead of once. It earns a place as a hypertrophy tool that generates brutal leg stimulus from loads well below your normal squat weights.

FAQ

What is the point of the extra partial at the bottom of the squat?

The bottom is where the quads are stretched hardest, and stretched muscle under load is prime growing territory. The partial keeps you living in that zone instead of just passing through it.

How much weight should I use for squats with a deep partial?

Noticeably less than your regular squat, often around two thirds, because every rep is really a rep and a half. If you can bounce through the partial without slowing down, it is too light. If you collapse in the hole, too heavy.

When should I programme one and a half squats?

They shine in hypertrophy blocks as a second squat variation, or any time you want big leg stimulus without maximal spinal loading. They are also sneaky good for learning to stay tight at depth.
