Muscle Growth

Why are my glutes not growing?

Glutes stall when you quad dominate your squats and lack direct hip extension volume like hip thrusts and Romanian deadlifts.

The quick answer

Most people who feel their squats in the quads are barely loading the glutes, so growth stalls. The glutes need horizontal hip extension under load, which means hip thrusts, Romanian deadlifts, and abductions, not just deeper squats. Aim for 10 to 16 hard glute sets a week, push near failure, and add weight over time.

How to think about it

Add direct hip extension

The hip thrust loads peak glute tension at full hip extension, exactly where squats offload. Build your glute work around thrusts, RDLs, and back extensions rather than expecting squats alone to do it.

Chase the stretch too

Deep Romanian deadlifts and deficit or paused work train the glutes in the stretched position, which drives strong growth. Let the hips travel back and feel the hamstring and glute lengthen.

Progressive overload, not just burn

Endless bodyweight bridges and band walks give a pump but little overload. Add load every week or two and keep sets within a few reps of failure.
