Lead with compounds
Open with one or two heavy multi joint lifts like squats or presses while you are fresh, then move to isolation as fatigue sets in. Order matters more than raw count.
Four to eight exercises per session hits the sweet spot; enough to cover the target muscles without dragging past an hour.
Most productive sessions run four to eight exercises, starting with one or two big compounds and finishing with isolation. Fewer than four usually means you are leaving volume on the table, and more than eight means quality drops as fatigue piles up. Think in sets per muscle rather than exercise count, roughly 2 to 4 exercises for large muscles and 1 to 2 for small ones.

A leg day might be 5 exercises covering quads, hamstrings, and glutes, while an arm focused day could be 6 smaller movements. Match count to how many muscles you are targeting.
Six exercises at 3 sets is 18 hard sets, which is plenty for one session. Beyond about 20 sets, junk volume creeps in and quality per set falls.
