How do I restart without getting too sore?

Come back at roughly half your old volume and light loads, stop well short of failure, and build up over 2 to 3 weeks.

The quick answer

The trick is to start far easier than your ego wants. Use maybe half the sets you used to do, moderate weight, and stop 4 or more reps short of failure for the first week or two. That gives you the repeated bout effect, so the second session is far less sore than a single all out return would be. Add a bit of volume and load each week and you will be back to full training in 2 to 3 weeks with minimal soreness.

How to think about it

Undershoot on purpose

One easy session dramatically reduces soreness from the next, so a gentle first week is the cheapest insurance against being wrecked. Do 1 to 2 sets per exercise with lots of reps in reserve.

Ramp weekly

Add a set or two per muscle and a little weight each week. In 2 to 3 weeks you can be at full volume, having sidestepped the crippling soreness a max effort restart causes.

Manage soreness between sessions

Light walking, a good warm up, adequate protein, and sleep all shorten DOMS. Do not judge the workout by how sore you get, judge it by whether you can repeat and progress it.
