How do I restart after taking time off?

Start at 50 to 70 percent of your old weights for 1 to 2 weeks, then rebuild fast thanks to muscle memory.

The quick answer

Do not pick up where you left off. Start at about 50 to 70 percent of your previous working weights, keep 2 to 3 reps in reserve, and use lighter volume for the first week or two to avoid brutal soreness. Muscle memory means you will regain old strength and size far faster than you built it, often within a few weeks.

How to think about it

Ease the load

After a layoff your tendons and technique need re grooving even if the muscle is still there. Starting around 60 percent lets you rebuild the movement and skip the crippling soreness that makes people quit again in week one.

Ramp the volume

Begin with fewer sets, maybe two thirds of your old volume, and add sets back over two to three weeks. This gradual reload rebuilds work capacity without overwhelming recovery.

Trust muscle memory

Previously trained muscle regains size and strength much quicker than the first time thanks to retained muscle nuclei. Expect to be back near your old numbers within four to eight weeks if you train consistently.
