Training Style

Can I powerlift and build muscle at the same time?

Yes; strength and size feed each other, so train heavy squat, bench, and deadlift then add hypertrophy accessories.

The quick answer

Strength and muscle are not opposites, they reinforce each other. Train your squat, bench, and deadlift in the 3 to 6 rep range for strength, then bolt on hypertrophy accessories at 8 to 15 reps to add size. A bigger muscle has more potential to be strong, and getting strong lets you overload it more. Eat in a slight surplus and this works well.

How to think about it

Heavy compounds for strength

Keep the big three at 3 to 6 reps with longer rests to build maximal force. This is the powerlifting side and it also grows muscle, just with more central nervous system cost.

Accessories for size

Add rows, curls, leg extensions, and presses at 8 to 15 reps near failure to pile on hypertrophy volume the main lifts alone cannot reach.

Fuel and recover for both

A slight calorie surplus and solid sleep let you recover from heavy triples and higher rep accessory work in the same week. Undereating forces you to choose one.
