How to do it

  1. Grip a dumbbell on the floor with one hand, hips back and chest up.
  2. Explosively extend your hips and knees to pull it up and catch it at your shoulder in a quarter squat.
  3. Dip your knees slightly, then drive up and press or punch the dumbbell overhead to lockout.
  4. Lower it back down under control and repeat before switching arms.

The one cue that matters

The jerk is two moves: a leg drive then a fast dip under. Don't try to muscle it up with your arm alone.
