How to do it

  1. Stand beside a low box in an athletic stance, one foot on top.
  2. Explode up and laterally over the box to the other side.
  3. Land soft on the ball of your foot with a bent knee.
  4. Immediately push off to shuffle back over, repeating side to side.

The one cue that matters

Stay low and explosive, driving laterally rather than just stepping across.

Muscles worked

Shuffling over a low box keeps you in a continuous cycle of loading and exploding sideways, the quads drive each push-off while the glutes control the hips through every landing and change of direction. Staying low in an athletic stance the whole time turns the set into leg conditioning as much as footwork. It earns its place for building lateral quickness and rhythm, the qualities that make defenders, boxers and court athletes hard to get past.

FAQ

What is the difference between a lateral box shuffle and a lateral box jump?

The jump is a single max effort onto the box, the shuffle is continuous, one foot on the box as you flow side to side over it. Jumps build peak power, shuffles build repeat speed, rhythm and conditioning.

How high should the box be for lateral shuffles?

Low, a step platform or small plyo box. The goal is fast ground contacts and staying low in your stance, a tall box turns the drill into a climb and kills the rhythm.

How long should lateral box shuffle sets last?

Work in short bursts, 15 to 30 seconds, with full recovery if you are training quickness, or longer intervals if it is conditioning. The set should end while your foot contacts are still quick and quiet.
