How to do it

  1. Stand on the first box with two feet near the edge.
  2. Step off and drop to the floor, landing soft on both feet.
  3. The instant you land, explode straight up onto the second box.
  4. Stand tall on top, then step down and reset.

The one cue that matters

Minimise ground time, rebound off the floor the moment you touch it.

Muscles worked

The 2-box depth jump trains reactive power, the ability of your quads and glutes to absorb a landing and fire straight back out of it. Stepping off the first box loads your legs on impact, and the instant rebound onto the second box teaches your muscles and tendons to return that energy fast instead of soaking it up. This is athletic training rather than muscle building, the tool for jumping higher and moving off the floor quicker.

FAQ

How high should the boxes be for depth jumps?

Start low, around knee height for the drop box. The drop height only earns an increase when you can rebound instantly with soft, quiet landings, dropping from too high just teaches slow, heavy landings.

How many depth jumps should I do per session?

Low reps, full quality. Something like 3 to 5 sets of 3 to 5 jumps with real rest between sets. The moment ground contact gets slow or landings get loud, you're done.

Are depth jumps bad for your knees?

The impact is the training effect, so respect the dose. Keep boxes low, land soft on both feet, keep total jumps modest, and if your knees complain, ease off the height and check your landing mechanics.
